After falling 40 feet from a bridge while attempting to apprehend three carjacking suspects, a Colorado police officer died.
On February 2, Officer Julian Becerra, 35, participated in an automobile chase that ended at a bridge close to Colorado Springs.
Becerra chased after the suspects as they fled from their car on foot before falling off the bridge and suffering a catastrophic injury.
He was sent to a local hospital in a hurry, but nine days later he passed away.
Veteran of the Air Force Becerra is survived by his wife and two kids.
The pursuit started at around 4 o’clock when the Department of Corrections requested assistance in finding the suspects.
According to Fountain Police Commander Mark Cristiani, the suspects attempted to steal another vehicle while they were in the middle of a car chase through the neighbourhood.
Around 8 o’clock in the evening, police were able to disable the suspects’ automobile, and they ran onto the bridge.
Becerra pursued on foot and came to rest in a riverbed.
The person he was looking for tried to leap from the bridge himself, but police stopped him before he could.
Anthony Vallejos, 37, Devon Bobian, 31, and Danisha Pacheco, 28, were all arrested as suspects in a carjacking.
Each was accused of a number of offences, including those connected to the automobile chase.
According to Denver 7, Beccera had a boy who was one and a daughter who was eight years old. Eight years had passed since he and his wife got married.
‘[He’s] just a fantastic dad. I’ve actually gotten to learn a lot from him as a dad, and a great husband as well. [He’s] just always there for his family, and never complaining. He’s just a fantastic guy,’ his brother-in-law, David Alderman, said after the accident.
In a statement, the Fountain Police Department expressed gratitude to the public for its support.
‘We appreciate the public’s outpouring of support over the past week for Officer Becerra, his family and the Fountain Police Department,’ they said.
Beccera was’surrounded by his family and friends,’ according to the Fountain Police Department, while he remained on life support.
Becerra was a member of the K-9 unit and had been on the force for more than four years. After his passing, a procession transported his body from the hospital to the coroner’s office.
A GoFundMe page was created by his brother-in-law to help the Beccera family.
