While covering the aftermath of several shootings that left four people dead on Wednesday, a reporter for a nearby NBC affiliate in Memphis started to cry.
Following the fatal incident, WMC Action News 5 reporter Joyce Peterson choked up as she advised the public to take cover. The alleged shooter remained at large at the time.
“Stay inside. Tell the people you love — call them, text them, email them. Tell them to stay inside. This is not a joke, this is an extremely dangerous situation,” Peterson said.
Before continuing with her unedited answer to the awful circumstance, a sobbing Peterson halted.
“Memphis is tired right now. Yeah, I’m good, I’m with you all. Memphis is tired right now,” she added. “The Eliza Fletcher kidnapping and abduction and murder, the other crimes we’ve had this year — it’s difficult right now,” she said.
Ezekiel Kelly, 19, was later detained by police in connection with a string of shootings in the Memphis area that left four individuals dead and three more injured. Kelly is accused of multiple felonies and had a criminal history that included an attempted first-degree murder.
During the alleged shooting spree, which allegedly started just before 1 a.m. local time and ended with Kelly’s arrest at around 9:30 p.m., Kelly livestreamed one of the shootings on Facebook.
During a press conference, Memphis Police Chief CJ David stated, “This has been a tragic week for the city of Memphis.”
