A flesh-eating bug killed an 11-year-old kid, according to his family.
A few weeks ago, Jesse Brown twisted his ankle while running on a treadmill.
He may have scratched it during the accident, allowing the bacteria to enter his system, according to his cousin Megan Brown from Florida in the United States.
The child’s leg was covered with splotchy, purple, red, bruise-like marks a few days after the accident, according to her.
He was quickly taken to the hospital and admitted to the intensive care unit, where doctors discovered a group A strep infection that had been bothering him.
This later changed into a flesh-eating organism called necrotizing fasciitis, which caused Jesse’s brain to grow and resulted in his death at the age of 11 years old.
According to Megan, who spoke to Fox 35 on Wednesday, “they explained that because he rolled his ankle, that’s likely where the infection attacked it, because it was already weak.”
Strep A bacteria often causes minor diseases, but it can occasionally result in invasive Group Strep A disease.
GAS is a type of bacteria that lives on the skin and in the throat.
If these bacteria enter the bloodstream or other regions where they shouldn’t be, invasive Group Strep A develops.
Jesse’s family claimed that the child had a boot on after suffering the injury and that they were unaware of how quickly things may deteriorate.
A GoFundMe page has now been created to assist with funding a memorial to honour the child.
“Jesse was a miraculous child,” the message on the page stated. It was predicted that his parents would never have children.
“They had given up hope, and after 10 years of trying, they were blessed with Jesse Ryder Brown. That miracle was taken from us far too soon.”
His passing occurs while Strep A infections continue to rise.
This week, it was announced that since September 2022, the illness has claimed the lives of at least 40 kids in the UK.
