In comparison to the 0.41 million commercially imported mobile handsets during the first five months of 2023 (January through May), local manufacturing facilities produced or assembled 4.88 million units.
According to official statistics, local manufacturing facilities produced/assembled 1.44 million mobile phones in May 2023 as opposed to 0.11 million commercially imported phones.
4.88 million mobile phone handsets, including 4 million 2G and 0.88 million smartphones, were produced or assembled locally.
In the first eleven months (July–May) of the current fiscal year 2022–23, the country imported mobile phones worth $516.488 million, representing a decrease of 73.46 percent from the $1.946 billion imported during the same period of the previous year.
According to data released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS), Pakistan’s mobile phone imports increased by 308 percent month over month (MoM) in May 2023 and totaled $43.201 million compared to imports of $10.587 million in April 2023.
In May 2023, mobile phone imports totaled $137.212 million, a 68.52 percent decline year-over-year (YoY) from May 2022’s $137.212 million.
Overall telecom imports into the nation totaled $860.441 million from July to May 2023, a decrease of 66.87 percent from the $2.597 billion imported during the same period of the previous fiscal year.
