In a helicopter raid in northeastern Syria, American soldiers killed an ISIS official wanted for smuggling weapons, according to US Central Command on Thursday.
Rakkan Wahid al-Shammri was assassinated on Wednesday as a result of his facilitation of the unlawful movement of fighters and weapons in support of the heinous objectives of the terror organisation, according to CENTCOM.

Since the mission that resulted in the death of former ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi in 2019, the raid was one of the biggest the US has carried out in Syria. Raids, as opposed to bombing, entail American soldiers walking across hostile area.
The operation, which took place outside of the village of Qamishli close to Syria’s border with Turkey, did not result in any casualties among the military or civilians. According to CENTCOM, which manages US military operations in the Middle East from its headquarters in Florida, no American equipment was destroyed or damaged.
Col. Joe Buccino, CENTCOM’s spokesperson, said in the statement, “[CENTCOM] is committed to our allies and partners in the enduring defeat of ISIS.
This year, the US has targeted a number of ISIS leaders, including the group’s former head Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi, who committed suicide with explosives during a mission in northwest Syria in February.
Maher al-Agal, the ISIS leader in Syria at the time, was assassinated by an American drone strike in July.
