According to a leak, Apple may offer low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO)-based 120Hz displays on all of its iPhone 17 (or 2025 iPhone) models. Ross Young, a DSCC analyst, tweeted a timeline outlining the advancements in iPhone display technology through 2027, despite the Cupertino giant appearing to be busy developing its 2023 iPhone family, which may be known as the iPhone 15. For the first time, Apple’s iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max feature LTPO screens. So far, only the iPhone Pro models have had the mechanism that makes features like an always-on display or ProMotion possible.
Ross Young stated in a tweet on Monday that starting in 2025, Apple will update all iPhone models with LTPO display panels. The 120Hz ProMotion feature will subsequently be available on the base iPhone models. Depending on usage, the LTPO display has a refresh rate of up to 120Hz and supports Always-On Display (AOD). The 120Hz ProMotion display was first introduced by Apple with the iPhone 13 Pro series in 2021, and the same technology was later added to the iPhone 14 Pro lineup from the previous year.
Young claims that Dynamic Island will be included with all iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 models. The software feature hides the TrueDepth camera system’s pill and hole while displaying alerts and status indicators. The Pro models in the iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 series are said to have an LTPO display, while the non-Pro models are said to have an LTPS display.
Additionally, according to the roadmap, the iPhone 17 Pro models will have a hole punch cutout for the selfie camera and under-display face ID. The anticipated 2026 release of the iPhone 18 Pro models will also feature the same style. The entry-level iPhone 17 and 18 models will switch to the LTPO display and feature Dynamic Island functionality.
In 2027, Apple might release its first smartphone with a full screen. The rumored iPhone 19 Pro and iPhone 19 Pro Max will be the first Apple products to include an under-screen front camera and Face ID. The standard models in Apple’s 2027 family, meanwhile, will have a hole punch display and under-display Face ID.
