This comparison of the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro demonstrates how much wider the gap has grown between Apple’s two primary iPhone product lines this year. Instead of being just an improved version of the iPhone 14, as previous iPhone Pro models were, the iPhone 14 Pro feels like an entirely new device. However, practically everything this time around has changed, including the design, chipset, and more.

While they both have screens the same size, the iPhone 14 feels like a very minor upgrade over the iPhone 13 while the iPhone 14 Pro offers much more significant upgrades over the iPhone 13 Pro.

In this comparison of the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro, we’ll highlight their main differences so you can choose the model that’s right for you. It is crucial to think about what distinguishes these phones, which only share a number and $200, from one another.

The iPhone 14 Plus and iPhone 14 Pro Max, which have larger screens than the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro but the same differences, are also included in this comparison.

Price and Availability:

On September 16, Apple released the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max. The iPhone 14 Plus followed on October 7. The Pro Max is priced at $1,099, followed by the Plus at $899, the Pro at $999, and the Pro at $1,099 in the lineup.

Design:

The first difference between the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro is in this area. The diagonal camera lens arrangement and slimmer notch on the standard iPhone 14 are essentially the same as those on the iPhone 13 from the previous year. That appears to be a magnified version of the iPhone 14 Plus. You’ll get along just fine with the iPhone 14’s design if you like that of the iPhone 13.

But it turns out that Apple spent its time on the iPhone 14 Pro. From the back, the design resembles that of the iPhone 13 Pro, but the camera module is bigger because of the new 48MP main sensor. This year’s popular Pro color is a magnificent deep purple, a rich violet fit for a king or queen. Meanwhile, the new canary yellow color is reserved exclusively for the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus.

The iPhone 14 Pro’s notch is gone around the front, and in its place is a large pill-shaped cutout that serves as the focal point of what Apple refers to as the Dynamic Island. With the help of this feature, the cutout for alerts and similar notifications is expanded to better fit the new screen space. The feature appeared professional and seemed to utilize the space well during the keynote.

The notch, which had been present since the release of the iPhone X in 2017, was thus eliminated by the iPhone 14 Pro. After five years of having to look at its unsightliness, the pill-shaped cutout is now much more attractive.

Display:

The good news is that this year’s iPhone 14 lineup only offers two screen sizes: 6.1 inches and 6.7 inches. The smallest iPhone models are the 14 and 14 Pro, while the 14 Plus and 14 Max have extremely large displays.

All four use OLEDs as the panel technology and have Apple’s Super Retina XDR display. The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro both have a resolution of 2532 x 1170 (460 PPI), making them both functionally equivalent. The iPhone 14 Plus has a resolution of 2778 x 1284 (458 ppi), while the iPhone 14 Pro Max has a resolution of 2796 x 1290 (460 PPI).

Apple claims that the displays on both the Pro and standard models are incredibly bright. While the iPhone 14 Pro is expected to have a mind-blowing peak HDR brightness of 2,000 nits, the iPhone 14 is only expected to have a maximum HDR brightness of 1,200 nits. That’s twice as bright as the iPhone 13 Pro’s rating and the brightest we’ve ever seen on a smartphone.

In contrast, the iPhone 14 Pro achieved a maximum HDR brightness of 1,448 nits during our tests. At 734 nits, the iPhone 14 performed significantly worse.

The iPhone 14 Pro introduces an always-on display feature to the iPhone. When your phone’s screen is off, you can glance at some basic information thanks to this low-power mode. As Apple is heavily relying on the adaptive refresh rate of the iPhone 14 Pro to prevent an always-on display from depleting the phone’s battery, the iPhone 14 does not get to enjoy this feature, which is standard on practically every Android phone.

The displays on iPhones are stunning, as they always are. Both the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro are impressive with any visual content thanks to their vibrant colors and rich blacks. However, the Pro has a clear advantage in terms of brightness, making it perfect for outdoor use.

Cameras:

Apple updated the cameras on the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro, as it does every year. The main 12MP sensor on the iPhone 14 (and iPhone 14 Plus) has larger pixels (1.9 microns), a faster f/1.5 aperture, and is claimed to perform 49% better in low light. Image stabilization due to sensor shift is standard.

All four iPhone 14 models’ 12MP front-facing cameras received a significant upgrade with an improved hybrid focus system, which is partially driven by the new autofocus functionality. This ought to result in clearer selfies. Along with the Photonic Engine, which makes use of AI to enhance low-light photography across all three cameras, Apple also unveiled the iPhone 14 lineup.

Thanks to Apple’s newest technology, Action mode, the video also experiences growth. Although it may not appear to be as impressive on the surface as the Cinematic mode upgrade from the previous year, Apple’s Action mode appears to significantly improve video stabilization, with the company claiming you don’t need a gimbal.

All of these software features are available on the iPhone 14 Pro, which also has a new 48MP main sensor that is 65% larger than the sensor on the iPhone 13 Pro. Even though it only has a 2x optical zoom on its own, you can take some nice zoomed photos when using it in conjunction with a 12MP 3x telephoto lens. In our Pixel 7 Pro vs. iPhone 14 Pro vs. Galaxy S22 Ultra zoom shootout, you can see how the iPhone 14 Pro’s zoom stacks up against other flagships.

The iPhone 14 Pro’s 12MP ultrawide camera is superior to the iPhone 13 Pro’s and lets in three times as much light. Improvements have even been made to the flash. Additionally, the iPhone 14 Pro can capture a huge 48MP RAW image for professionals, opening up a wealth of editing possibilities.

Performance:

The chipset is yet another distinction between the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro. The A15 Bionic from the previous year remains in the iPhone 14, but it is the more advanced model found in the iPhone 13 Pro, the one with a 5-core GPU. By today’s standards, it is still a potent chip, barely beating out Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 in terms of performance.

The new A16 Bionic, which is equipped with a hexa-core CPU, penta-core GPU, and 16-core Neural Engine and is manufactured using a 4nm process, is available for the iPhone 14 Pro. This chip is extremely powerful and outperforms every other smartphone. (However, the newest Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 will bring Android very close to Apple’s standard.)

The iPhone 14 Pro received a single-core score of 1,891 and a multicore score of 5,469 on Geekbench 5. Compare that to the 1,727 / 4,553 output of the iPhone 14. That is a significant improvement in multi-core performance.

Another difference can be seen in the GPU, with the iPhone 14 Pro managing an average frame rate of 74 fps in 3DMark Wild Life Unlimited. The same benchmark yielded 69 fps for the iPhone 14. Not much of a difference, but still important to note.

In the Adobe Premiere Rush 4K-1080p transcode test, the phones are essentially equal, with the iPhone 14 Pro finishing the benchmark in 26 seconds and the iPhone 14 following closely behind at 28 seconds.

The difference between the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 may be noticeable to performance freaks, but most people won’t. However, you must go pro if you want the best of the best.

Battery Life and Charging:

Since Apple never discloses battery capacities, we don’t know much about the four different iPhone models’ batteries and must instead rely on what the company has said and our own experience. In light of this, the battery life of the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 both fell short of expectations.

The iPhone 14 Pro barely outperformed the average we saw in our battery life test, where we ask a phone to continuously reload web pages over a cellular connection, coming in at 10 hours, 13 minutes. A worse 9 hours, 28 minute time was recorded by the iPhone 14.

With 14 hours, 42 minutes, and 11 hours, 57 minutes, respectively, the iPhone 14 Pro Max and iPhone 14 Plus performed significantly better.

Here is what Apple said regarding battery life for its new phones for your reference:

  • Up to 20 hours of video playback on the iPhone 14
  • Up to 26 hours of video playback on the iPhone 14 Plus
  • Advertisement
  • Up to 23 hours of video playback on the iPhone 14 Pro
  • 29 hours of playback time for videos on the iPhone 14 Pro Max

Software:

The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro are nearly identical in this regard. The newest iteration of Apple’s mobile operating system, iOS 16, is installed on each of them. This includes features like the updated lock screen, which you can personalize to fit your preferences (and make multiple copies of to switch between, like with Focus modes).

In addition, iMessage now allows you to edit and reverse messages sent, share photos with family members using the iCloud Shared Photo Library, and make other improvements. Your new iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max will all come pre-installed with the most recent version of iOS 16 because it will be available for all compatible iPhones on September 12.

Verdict:

There have never been more differences between the Pro and regular iPhone models than what you’ll find in the iPhone 14 lineup, as we stated at the outset of our comparison of the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro. While pushing the envelope with the iPhone 14 Pro, Apple appears to have held back on the iPhone 14, making only minor to moderate improvements over the iPhone 13.

The iPhone 14 Pro seems to be the center of attention with this round of updates, from its flashy new design to its improved cameras and potent A16 Bionic chipset. Between the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro, you get significantly better performance, more powerful telephoto capabilities, a brighter display, and improved photography skills for an additional $200. The same is true for the iPhone 14 Plus and the iPhone 14 Pro Max, though those looking for a big-screen iPhone for less than $1,000 might find the Plus appealing.
