The new versions of iPadOS 17 and macOS Sonoma were introduced at WWDC 2023. Along with iOS 17, Apple also unveiled its most recent software for the iPad and Mac product lines. With new features that emphasize creativity, health, and multitasking, iPadOS 17 aims to increase productivity. Additionally, Apple will let users customize the iPad’s lock screen. Additionally, there are interactive widgets and a new Notes app that supports PDF editing. Support for new screensavers, widgets on the home screen, and other features are also coming to macOS Sonoma.
Later this year, eligible devices will be able to download the brand-new iPadOS 17 and macOS Sonoma from Apple. Here is a quick overview of all the new features in macOS Sonoma and iPadOS 17 that were revealed at WWDC 2023.
iPadOS 17 Features:
For the first time, iPadOS will support customized lock screens. The feature functions in a similar way to how iOS 16 lock screens are customized by iPhone users. Users can customize their iPad lock screen by choosing their own wallpapers, changing the font, and choosing the Focus modes that suit them best.
With iPadOS 17, Live Activities—another iOS 16 feature—will be available on the iPad. Additionally, Apple is incorporating assistance for interactive widgets into iPadOS 17. Without opening the specific app, users will be able to activate the lights, play a song, or mark a reminder as finished from a widget.
A new PDF experience is also coming to the Notes app. Users of iPadOS 17 will be able to quickly add information to PDFs, including names, addresses, and emails from Contacts. “PDFs now display in full width in iPadOS 17, making it simple to flip through pages, annotate quickly, or sketch directly in the document with the Apple Pencil. Users can now review and annotate PDFs and scanned documents directly in their notes, and thanks to live collaboration, changes to a note shared with others update instantly, according to a blog post by Apple.
In iPadOS 17, Apple has also added support for the Health app. Since the information from the iPhone’s Health app is already stored on iCloud, users will be able to access their Health data without the need for their phone. The iPad’s Health app has been enhanced and created to make the most of the larger screen.
Stage Manager has been enhanced, allowing for greater flexibility in the placement and size of the windows. New drawing tools, and support for hover, tilt, and snap to shape will all be available in the Freeform app. Any object can also have new shapes and connection lines added to it.
Today, developers will have access to iPadOS 17, which is scheduled to be made available to eligible iPad users later this year.
macOS Sonoma Features:
Support for screensavers that feature slow-motion videos of various locations around the world is now available with the new macOS Sonoma update. Additionally, it enables users to add interactive widgets to the desktop, which are said to meld perfectly with the wallpaper as users use apps. Users can bring their iPhone widgets to macOS using the feature’s use of Apple’s Continuity.
To capitalize on the potent performance of the Apple Silicon, Apple has added a new Game Mode for the first time in macOS. Game Mode is said to optimize the gaming experience by giving games top priority on the CPU and GPU, resulting in smoother and more consistent frame rates. All currently released and upcoming Mac video games are said to be compatible with game mode.
Apple has introduced improved video conferencing features for those who participate in meetings virtually, claiming to present and share their work more effectively within any video conferencing app. It has a brand-new Presenter Overlay video effect that places the user in front of the shared content. There are updates for Messages, Reminders, Siri, Safari, and more.
According to Apple, macOS Sonoma will be made available to developers today and is anticipated to be made available for devices that qualify later this year.
