Following Arema FC’s matchup versus Persebaya Surabaya in the league, a riot is said to have resulted in the deaths of dozens of football supporters in Indonesia.
Although no official death toll has yet been confirmed, some local media sites have stated that dozens of supporters died on the field at the Kanjuruhan Stadium in Malang following a pitch invasion at the conclusion of the game. Many supporters were hurried to the nearby Wava Husada and Kanjuruhan hospitals.
According to PT Liga Indonesia Baru (LIB) President Akhmad Hadian Lukita: “We lament this occurrence a great deal and are concerned. We send our sympathies, and we hope that everyone will learn something from this.”
The following statement was sent on Saturday night by Persebaya’s official Twitter account: “Persebaya’s extended family greatly mourns the loss of life after the Arema FC vs. Persebaya match. Football is not worth a single life. We offer prayers for the victims and ask for courage for the families who lost loved ones.
