Imran Khan, the leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), was detained by Rangers from the Islamabad High Court (IHC), who were acting in accordance with a warrant issued by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).
Prior to his scheduled appearance before the IHC to request bail in numerous FIRs filed against him, the former chairman was detained as part of the NAB’s investigation into the Al-Qadir Trust case.
Imran Khan was taken away by Rangers personnel in a black Toyota Hilux Vigo and dropped off at NAB Rawalpindi.
Dr. Akbar Nasir Khan, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) in Islamabad, confirmed the development and stated that things are under control.
According to Geo News, the PTI chairman was being detained while en route to the IHC for biometric verification. Arrest warrants were in the hands of NAB officials.
Khan’s warrants were issued on May 1 by Nazir Ahmad Butt, the chairman of the NAB.
Khan was detained in accordance with the specifics of Section 9A of the National Accountability Ordinance 1999.
‘Tortured’ by Rangers:
According to Imran Khan Khan’s attorney, Barrister Ali Gohar, the Rangers officers “tortured” the party chairman during the arrest.
“Imran Khan was hit on the head and his injured leg,” he alleged.
He continued by saying that Ali Bukhari and he had been present when the PTI leader was taken into custody.
Advocate Gohar added that “Rangers broke through the glass and entered the diary branch,” and that they also damaged the main gate of the IHC before ransacking the IHC office.
IHC takes notice:
The Islamabad IG and the interior secretary were summoned within “15 minutes” after Khan was arrested by the IHC Chief Justice Aamer Farooq, who took notice of the situation.
In addition, he ordered the second attorney general to find out right away who was responsible for the arrest and to appear before the court in 15 minutes.
The chief justice stated that “action will be taken against the prime minister and ministers if an inquiry needs to be conducted.”
Tell us in which case the arrest was made, Justice Farooq continued.
The Islamabad advocate general then asked the court to extend the time allotted for the hearing from 15 minutes to 30 minutes, but the request was denied and he was told to appear in 15 minutes.
Imran Khan ‘abducted’
The PTI, meanwhile, has denounced the party chairman’s arrest, calling it a “abduction” by the police, and has urged its supporters and employees to organize protests across the nation.
