Hurricane G, a New York rapper, passed away at age 52.
Gloria Rodriguez, a pioneering figure in hip-hop, has received an outpouring of tributes since her bereaved family revealed her passing on Sunday.
Gloria’s daughter’s father, Erick Sermon of EPMD, led the condolences in a post on Instagram that read: “My heart is hardened today. One of my good friends… my oldest daughter’s mother passed away today.
“In the hip-hop scene, #HURRICANEGLORIA was also a legend in her own way. one of the earliest female rappers from Puerto Rico. She joined me in rapping, @redmangilla paving the way.
She was featured in all of the hip-hop magazines at the time, among all of the major female artists. “@keithmurray @diddy enjoyed a song that she did called “MILKY” She will be missed by people all over the world.
“I can’t believe this. Pray for us. Beautiful blessings. She was a beautiful person a wonderful mother as real as they come. We love u Gr.”
Another wrote: “She was a legend. So much style”.
Her cause of death has yet to be revealed.
Gloria’s career lasted an incredible 30 years, during which time she collaborated with artists like P Diddy and Redman.
She first gained notoriety in the 1990s, and her 1997 single, “Somebody Else,” which peaked at number 10 on the Billboard charts, was a hit.
Gloria, the first female member of the Hit Squad, was a Brooklyn native. In 1997, she released the album All Woman, and in 2013, Mami and Papi.
On the albums of Keith Murray, Redman, Xzibit, Delinquent Habits, Funkdoobiest, and the Cocoa Brovaz, she made cameo performances.
