King Charles III will become the 40th monarch of the United Kingdom when he is crowned the queen consort on May 6 at Westminster Abbey in London.
Millions of people from the UK and other countries will attend and take part in the coronation ceremony.
The coronation is expected to cost between 50 and 100 million pounds ($63-126 million), according to unofficial sources. It takes place when UK inflation is at an all-time high. In a recent YouGov poll, 51% of Britons said they didn’t think the government should pay for the coronation.
As official occasions, coronations are funded by the government. According to a spokesman for Buckingham Palace, “the UK government and the sovereign grant will be among the funding sources.”
The monarch’s official obligations are covered by the sovereign grant, which is funded by taxes. For the years 2021–2022, the total award was 86.3 million pounds ($108.8 million).
King George VI, the great-grandfather of King Charles III, was crowned in 1937 at a cost of 454,000 pounds ($573,000), or 24.8 million pounds ($31m) in today’s money. His mother, Queen Elizabeth II, was crowned in 1953 at a cost of 912,000 pounds ($1.2 million), or roughly 20.6 million pounds ($26 million) in today’s money.
The cost of King Charles’ coronation will be made public following the ceremony.
