The Fortey family of Cwmbran, Wales, set the Guinness World Record for the “heaviest sunflower head.” The 6.44-kilogram gigantic sunflower head, which was planted by 44-year-old Kevin Fortey with the assistance of his brother Gareth, mother Marjorie, and son Jamie, came as a huge surprise to him. The enormous bloom took around 20 weeks to develop; it was planted in late May and harvested in October. Such a substantial increase had to be transported to the nearby post office for weighing.
According to Kevin Fortey, their 2022 harvest’s sunflower was the largest in the bunch. According to reports, it was 3.35 meters tall (approximately 11 feet). Kevin said, “I was stunned by the weight of this giant blossom. Interestingly, the sunflower grew from a seed that belonged to a line that the Fortey family claims are 100 years old. It is known as the “Fortey Gaint Sunflower” by the family. David was given a detailed explanation of the planting procedure by Kevin, who said that cultivating plants needs commitment, talent, and hard work. He described how the sunflower with the heaviest head has to be grown with the utmost care.
He said that because of its weight, the flower needed a suitable framework to support its own weight. “Growing any plant successfully requires patience, focus, commitment, expertise, and experience. As the sheer weight of the heads made it impossible for the heavier-headed sunflower plants to grow up without some sort of support,” Kevin said, “they require a better-planned framework to grow up.” According to reports, the record-breaking bloom was developed on the family’s property in Suffolk before being transported to Wales.
