Commissioner Karachi Muhammad Iqbal Memon issued new orders on Saturday to close markets and shopping malls in the city by 8:30 p.m.
The development comes a day after the federal government directed the Sindh government to implement the energy conservation plan, which calls for all markets to close at 8:30 p.m.
The Ministry of Inter-Provincial Coordination wrote to Chief Minister Sindh Syed Murad Ali Shah, urging him to ensure the province’s energy conservation plan is implemented.
In a letter to all deputy commissioners, the Karachi commissioner directed authorities to ensure that markets close by 8:30 p.m. and restaurants and wedding halls close by 10 p.m.
The letters urged DCs to implement the federal government’s energy-saving plan in their respective districts.
The move is part of the government’s energy conservation plan, which Shehbaz Sharif announced last month.
Khawaja Asif told the media after a cabinet meeting that the energy conservation plan would help Pakistan save 8,000 to 9,000 megawatts of electricity and Rs62 billion per year.
