The launch of Google’s Pixel 8 series of smartphones is expected to take place in October of this year. The upcoming Pixel family is anticipated to be powered by Tensor G3, codenamed Zuma, Google’s third-generation branded SoC. This year’s Google I/O keynote did not include a Tensor G3 preview, but a new leak has revealed the chipset’s specifications. The 1+4+4 CPU configuration with ARMv9 cores could be used by the Tensor G3 SoC. It is likely to include an ARM Mali-G715 GPU with 10 cores and an 890MHz frequency. It might also have AV1 encoding capabilities.
According to a report by Kamila Wojciechowska of Android Authority, the Tensor G3 SoC will experience significant advancements. According to the report, the Tensor G3 will have nine CPU cores arranged in a 1+4+4 configuration. Tensor G2 from last year has a 4+2+2 core configuration. Google reportedly redesigned the entire CPU block to use the ARMv9 core in 2022 with the newest chipset.
According to rumors, the new CPU will have four Cortex-A715 cores with a default frequency of 2.45GHz, four Cortex-A510 cores with a frequency of 2.15GHz, and one Cortex-X3 core operating at 3.00GHz. It might include an ARM Mali-G715 GPU with 10 cores and an 890MHz clock speed. This would be a significant improvement over Tensor G2’s seven-core Mali-G710 graphics processor.
According to reports, the Tensor G3 will be the first smartphone SoC to support AV1 encoding. As a result, Samsung Multi-Function Codec (MFC) would be able to support H.264 and HEVC encoding and decoding of 8K30 videos.
Additionally, a new TPU (Tensor Processing Unit) with the codename “Rio” and a 1.1GHz clock speed will reportedly be included in the Tensor G3. The “Janeiro” TPU that powered the Tensor G2 processor at 1.0GHz is expected to be significantly outclassed by the next-generation TPU.
A second-generation digital signal processor (DSP) or GXP with the codename “Callisto” is also anticipated to be included in Tensor G3. It might also come with an updated Samsung UFS controller that can support UFS 4.0 storage.
The Exynos Modem 5300 from the Tensor G2 may still be used by Google in the new SoC. Even though a slightly different version of the Pixel 8 series is rumored to be coming.
The anticipated release of the Pixel 8 is still months away. The Pixel 8 series is anticipated to support 12W wireless charging and may share many specifications with the Pixel 7 series.
