According to police, an Ohio man was charged this week in the death of his girlfriend, whose body was discovered in a landfill.
According to the Columbus Division of Police, Gene Scott Jr. is accused of killing Renee Benedetti, 40, of Columbus and disposing of her body at a Rumpke Waste facility in Brown County.
He has been charged with murder on one count.
Benedetti was last seen on Jan. 26 and has been missing for a month, according to police.
On Jan. 31, the Columbus Police Department contacted the Columbus Division of Police about a possible homicide, and she was reported missing, according to Columbus police Cmdr. Mark Denner during a press conference on Thursday.
Scott was arrested in Kentucky on a weapons charge less than two days later and extradited to Ohio.
Denner said investigators were led to the landfill, where they searched for more than two weeks beginning on Feb. 20 before discovering her body on Wednesday.
Scott allegedly admitted to choking Benedetti “until she was motionless” during an argument on Jan. 29, according to court documents obtained by the Columbus Dispatch on Thursday.
“Mr. Scott then wrapped up Miss Benedetti’s body in a rug and later disposed of her body in southern Ohio,” the court documents said, according to the Dispatch.
Denner told reporters that Scott is believed to have acted alone.
