Gavin Escobar, a former tight end for the Dallas Cowboys, and another woman died on Wednesday in a rock climbing accident close to Southern California, according to authorities.
Rescuers were summoned to Tahquitz Rock near Idyllwild at around 12:30 p.m. local time after receiving a distress call, according to the Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Department. Rescuers discovered the climbers dead after ascending a steep, secluded region, according to officials.
Escobar, who is 31 years old, and Chelsea Walsh, who is 33 years old, were the climbers.
From 2013 to 2017, Escobar participated in NFL games for the Dallas Cowboys and Baltimore Ravens. During his career, he caught 30 passes for 333 yards and 8 touchdowns. Alliance of American Football is where he completed his football career.
On Wednesday, a little rain fell nearby, but it wasn’t immediately obvious if that had anything to do with the climbers’ deaths. The granite cliffs at Tahquitz Rock are notoriously steep.
