According to authorities, a college baseball player from Michigan was blatantly shot and killed following the team’s first victory of the year.
According to the Muskingum County Prosecutor’s Office, Franklin J. Grayson, a former student, is accused of shooting the unnamed Olivet College player three times after the game on Friday night at Muskingum University in Ohio.
Shortly after the game, the victim returned to the field’s dugout to get something for himself when he was shot, according to Olivet College.
The athlete was given immediate medical attention on the spot before being taken to the hospital, where he is currently listed in stable condition, according to Muskingum University.
While the suspect was at large, school administrators issued an order for the campus to remain in place.
According to prosecutors, the alleged shooter was apprehended after witnesses gave a description that appeared to match Grayson.
Grayson, of Jacksonville, Florida, was charged with one count of felonious assault with a firearm and one count of attempted murder with a firearm, according to the prosecution.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim, his family and all others impacted by this crime,” the prosecutor’s office said in a statement.
If convicted, Grayson could be imprisoned for up to 14 years.
But more charges could be filed as the probe into the shooting continues.
He’s currently in custody as prosecutors plan to request $1 million bail.
No motive was revealed by officials so far.
“Law enforcement also stated they have no indication of a relationship between the parties and that there was no known or ongoing threat to the student-athlete, the Olivet College community, or other individuals,” Olivet College said in a statement.
According to Olivet College officials, Grayson will graduate from the southern Michigan-based institution in 2021.
As reported by The Detroit News According to school records, Grayson, 26, attended commencement in 2021 and graduated with a degree in business administration and management. He attended the school from 2016 to 2020, according to the newspaper.
After starting the season 0-12, the upsetting shooting marred Olivet’s first victory of the year. The team’s remaining scheduled games this weekend have been postponed.
For the weekend, Muskingum cancelled all of its sporting events.
“The College is in communication with the student-athletes and their parents and will continue to provide support in the days ahead,” Olivet College stated. “This is a challenging time for all involved and our attention is focused on supporting the student-athletes and staff members.”
