Administrators said on Saturday that Indian bowler Ravindra Jadeja, who won the game, will be penalised a quarter of his first Test match pay for violating procedure to treat a finger injury on his own while bowling against Australia.
The all-rounder was instrumental in India’s humiliating innings victory on Thursday with scores of 5-47 and 70 runs, including an important partnership with captain Rohit Sharma that helped eliminate the tourists in only three days.
However, pictures taken at Nagpur Stadium during the first day showed Jadeja stroking an unknown material on the index finger of his bowling hand, increasing the possibility of ball tampering.
The match referee was satisfied that the cream was “given to the finger entirely for medical grounds,” according to the International Cricket Council, to lessen swelling.
However, it said that Jadeja had violated its code of conduct by failing to “seek permission to do so from the on-field umpires.”
The ICC stated in a statement that Jadeja “admitted the wrongdoing and accepted the sentence.”
It continued, “The cream was not put to the ball as an artificial product, and as a result, it did not modify the state of the ball.
The first Test for the top-ranked all-rounder in the world came in Nagpur after he recovered from a knee injury that may have ended his career.
India now leads the four-match Test series 1-0.
