Following a shooting in McGregor on Thursday morning, a senior law enforcement official confirmed to KWTX that five people are dead and a suspect is in jail.
Just before 8 a.m., there was a gunfire. on Monroe in the 900 block. An unidentified man shot his wife and her two children to death, the official informed KWTX.
Once the police got on the scene, they also discovered two other victims in a nearby residence. The bodies of two women were discovered, one by the roadside and the other inside a nearby house.
According to reports, McGregor police shot the shooter, who was then brought to the hospital.
Around 12:15, authorities conducted a press conference, however they only revealed that a gun was used in the incident.
Parents have been informed by McGregor ISD that counsellors are available on several campuses. The district issued a statement saying that “all MISD activities, including the JH pep rally and all JH & sub-varsity games, have been cancelled out of respect for the victims in light of today’s events.”
Around 8 a.m., locals in the vicinity of Monroe and West 8th Street reported hearing gunfire. Before the police arrived in the area, a nearby construction worker informed KWTX that he saw a wounded person lying on the ground and a man firing shots at a different individual. The information has not been formally confirmed by authorities.
Parents and staff were informed about the event right away, and McGregor ISD briefly shut down all of its schools. James Lenamon, superintendent of McGregor ISD, wrote in a message to his community, “Rumors abound about what appears to be a tragic catastrophe in our community.”
“There was a domestic disturbance that resulted in a shooting in McGregor this morning. As a result of that shooting, MISD ‘locked down’ for about 15 minutes. Once we received an all clear from MPD, the lockdown was lifted,” the superintendent further said.
Lenamon said grief counselors would be made available at district campuses if needed.
“This is a very fluid situation. Details are coming in rapidly and the gravity of the situation, and the required response, will change many times before the day is out. We will update you throughout the day as appropriate,” the superintendent said, “Rest assured, that the mental and physical well-being of every student and staff member is our top priority. We will be here today, and in the days to come, to meet the needs our your children.”
All middle school, freshman, and junior varsity football games have been postponed, according to the Troy Independent School District, “because to the unfortunate incident in the McGregor neighbourhood,” on Thursday.
The district expressed, “Our thoughts and prayers are with all those impacted.”
Two of the victims were recognised by a GoFundMe page. Funds are being raised by relatives to cover funeral costs and support remaining family members.
A prayer vigil for the victims will be held at Bethlehem Christian Church by the McGregor neighbourhood. The address of the church is 209 N. In McGregor, the 2nd Street.
