MEMPHIS, TEXAS: US Marshalls detained previously convicted felon Cleotha Abston on Saturday, September 3, for the kidnapping and murder of Tennessee heiress Eliza Fletcher.
An arrest complaint states that Abston was caught after DNA recovered on a pair of sandals found at Eliza Fletcher’s last known location identified them as being his. Police suspect that someone who lived at the house where Abston was staying owned the car that was used in the kidnapping. In the kidnapping’s surveillance film, the identical automobile was seen. Abston was allegedly seen washing the interior of the car, according to witnesses.
Edgar Rodriguez, a parent from Anaheim, was shot and killed as he and his family were present at an engagement party in a Los Angeles suburb, according to authorities. The incident occurred in Northridge, California. The incident, which started as a dispute between two men and turned violent, is thought to have taken place on September 4 at around 11:15 p.m.
According to the Los Angeles Police Department, hundreds of people, including the 29-year-old Rodriguez, his mother, wife, and two young children, attended the engagement celebration in a sizable dining hall in Northridge. Rodriguez was shot outside the banquet site on Parthenia Street following a dispute that started inside the location, according to the LAPD, as stated by CBS.
A suspect who fired a shotgun at Rodriquez is accused of shooting him many times in the upper body. At the engagement party, Rodriquez was acknowledged by family members before passing away there shortly after. The LAPD immediately sent police to the location after learning that a guy had been shot in the parking lot. A second man who was harmed received immediate first aid.
Police say the suspect as a man in his 40s who fled the scene and is now at large. Despite witnesses telling officers who the perpetrator was, police have not yet released his name or a description.

Over the Labor Day weekend, there was an uptick in gun violence across the nation. According to data from the Gun Violence Archive, 323 gunshots were reported nationwide between September 2 and September 4. A surge of shootings, particularly in Chicago, left nine people dead and close to 50 others hurt over the holiday weekend, according to CBS. Chicago contributed roughly 14% of the nation’s weekend total.

321 people are shot daily in the US, according to data from the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project’s HCUPnet. 111 of them end in fatalities. Gun Violence Archive reports that 13,943 gun violence fatalities have occurred thus far in 2022, excluding suicide. This year, there have been more than 27,000 gun-related injuries.
