Dubai has implemented new penalties and steep fines for traffic rule violators in an effort to ensure proper adherence to the rules.
The deportation of drivers and new fines of up to AED 50,000 have reportedly been implemented to reduce traffic violations in the city. The updated penalties are in force as of July 6, 2023.
Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister, and Ruler of the United Arab Emirates, issued Decree No. 30 of 2023, which amended Decree No. 29 of 2015.
High Penalties of AED 50,000 and AED 100,000:
In Dubai, releasing a vehicle that has been impounded for a specific reason requires paying a fine of AED 50,000 ($13,600).
Among them are operating a motorcycle for pleasure on paved roads, speeding or endangering other motorists or property, jumping red lights, using a fake license plate, intentionally colliding with a police car, and operating a vehicle before the age of 18.
A higher fine of AED 100,000 ($27,200) will be assessed in order to release vehicles that were impounded after participating in road races without permission from the authorities.
Low Penalties of AED 10,000:
For the release of impounded vehicles that have broken certain laws, a smaller fine of AED 10,000 ($2,720) is required. These infractions include making changes to increase speed or noise, eluding police, operating a vehicle without license plates, and tinting windows more than is legally allowed.
Confiscation of Vehicle:
Dubai Police may seize a vehicle if the total amount of traffic fines exceed AED 6,000 ($1,630) in accordance with Dubai’s traffic laws.
Deportation of Non-Nationals:
Driving a heavy vehicle through a red light in Dubai will result in deportation for expat drivers.
