Police in Las Vegas have detained a suspect in Tupac Shakur’s 1996 drive-by shooting.

It’s a long-awaited breakthrough in a case that has captivated the public’s interest since the hip-hop icon was gunned down on the Las Vegas Strip 27 years ago.

According to two officials with first-hand knowledge of the arrest, Duane “Keffe D” Davis was arrested early Friday morning (September 29), though the particular charge or charges were not immediately clear. They had not been given permission to speak publicly ahead of an expected indictment later Friday.

Davis has long been known to investigators and has himself admitted in interviews and in his 2019 tell-all memoir, “Compton Street Legend,” that he was in the Cadillac where the gunfire erupted during the September 1996 drive-by shooting. Shakur was 25 when he was gunned down in a drive-by shooting near the Las Vegas Strip on the evening of September 7 1996.

In a convoy of roughly ten automobiles, the rapper was in a BMW driven by Death Row Records founder Marion “Suge” Knight. They were stopped at a red light when a white Cadillac drove up next to them and opened fire. Shakur was shot repeatedly and died a week later.

Davis publicly admitted to being inside the Cadillac during the attack in an interview for a BET show in 2018, after being diagnosed with cancer. He named his nephew, Orlando “Baby Lane” Anderson, as one of the two guys in the back car who fired the rounds. The shooting occurred immediately after a casino brawl earlier in the evening in which Anderson, Shakur, and others were involved.

Anderson denies any role in the shooting of Assata Shakur. He was killed in a shootout in Compton, California, two years later. Shakur died as his fourth solo album, “All Eyez on Me,” was still selling well, with over 5 million copies sold.

Shakur, who has been nominated for six Grammy Awards, is widely regarded as one of the most influential and versatile rappers of all time. At the time, Shakur was warring with rap rival Biggie Smalls, commonly known as the Notorious B.I.G., who was killed in a shooting in March 1997.

At this time both rappers were in the middle of an East Coast-West Coast rivalry and it primarily defined the hip-hop scene during the mid-1990s. Greg Kading, a retired Los Angeles police detective who spent years investigating the Shakur killing and wrote a book about it, said he “would not be surprised” by Davis’s indictment and arrest. In a recent Interview with The Associated Press Greg said: “People have been yearning for him to be arrested for a long time. It’s never been unsolved in our minds. It’s been unprosecuted.”

Kading stated that he interviewed Davis in 2008 and 2009, during Los Angeles police investigations into the assassinations of Shakur and Biggie Smalls in Las Vegas. Kading also stated that he spoke with a Las Vegas police detective about the matter, including after the SWAT raid on the Henderson residence in July.

The former LAPD investigator believes the probe gained traction in recent years as a result of Davis’ public claims of his role in the murder, which included his 2019 tell-all biography, Compton Street Legend. “It’s those events that have given Las Vegas the ammunition and leverage to move forward,” he said. The instances were unprosecutable prior to Keefe D’s public remarks.

“He put himself squarely in the middle of the conspiracy,” Kading said of Davis and the Shakur assassination. He had obtained the pistol, delivered it to the gunman, and was present in the vehicle when they pursued and apprehended Tupac and Suge (Knight).
