Aafia Siddiqui, a March 2, 1972, native of Pakistan, is currently serving an 86-year sentence in the Federal Medical Center, Carswell in Fort Worth, Texas, for attempted murder and other charges.
Siddiqui was born in Pakistan into a Sunni Muslim family. Beginning in 1990, she spent time studying in the US; in 2001, she earned a Ph.D. in neuroscience from Brandeis University.
She briefly visited Pakistan again after the 9/11 attacks, and she also went there in 2003, during the war in Afghanistan.
She is still the only woman to have featured on the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigations’ Seeking Information – Terrorism list after Khalid Sheikh Muhammad named her as an al-Qaeda financier and courier.
Around this time, she and her three children are believed to have been kidnapped in Pakistan.
Five years later, she made her way back to Ghazni, Afghanistan, where she was detained by the FBI while being questioned and captured by Afghan police.
