At the Federal Medical Center, Carswell in Fort Worth, Texas, the two sisters, Drs. Aafia and Fauzia Siddiqui recently met. The two-and-a-half-hour meeting was held apart from one another due to a glass wall. Dr. Aafia told her sister about how the US government had treated her. The US government, however, prohibited Dr. Fauzia from displaying images of Dr. Aafia’s children to the woman.
The son of Dr. Aafia, who was only six months old when she was taken into custody, is now an adult. Her daughter is now a physician. Dr. Aafia is expected to meet with Dr. Fauzia, Senator Mushtaq, and Dr. Aafia’s American attorney, Clive Smith, again today to discuss the next steps in the effort to secure her release.
At a Texas federal medical prison, Dr. Aafia is presently receiving medical care. This facility offers specialized medical and mental health care to female prisoners.
After being found guilty of attempted murder and other charges by a federal court in New York in 2010, she is currently serving an 86-year sentence in the US.
On May 8, it was revealed that Dr. Fauzia Siddiqui had received a US visa, enabling her to visit her sister who is detained there. The Islamabad High Court was informed of this development during a hearing regarding Dr. Aafia’s release.
The government has been ordered by the court to set up Dr. Aafia Siddiqui’s independent psychiatric evaluation. In order to prevent this information from being used for purposes outside the purview of the case, they have also ordered that Clive Smith, her attorney, receive access to all documents and information pertaining to her case.
