One of the nation’s oldest Arabic inscriptions was reportedly found during survey work, according to the Saudi Heritage Commission. The sixth-oldest inscription known to exist was discovered in Saudi Arabia’s southern Najran region, in the Hima cultural area, on the Al-Haqqan mountain.

Around 380 AD, an Arab trader by the name of Ka’b bin Amr bin Abd Manat first recorded it. As he returned to his home in the Arabian Peninsula’s northwest, Abd Manat came across the inscription. He used the Nabataean calendar’s symbols with numerical values to record and seal the Arabic inscription with the creation date.

A significant historical find, the Al-Haqqan inscription was recently discovered, adding to the body of early Arabic writings produced before the advent of Islam. It also symbolizes a critical period in the evolution of Arabic writing. Other older inscriptions from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia can be found in places like Al Ula, Najran, Jouf, and Tabuk.

The Heritage Commission is actively working to preserve protected areas and investigate the heritage of various Saudi regions. In accordance with the objectives of the National Strategy for Culture as part of the Kingdom’s Vision 2030, the commission acknowledges the cultural and economic value of antiquities and national heritage.

The inscription was discovered in the Hima cultural area, which is a huge outdoor museum filled with numerous ancient inscriptions and burial mounds. One of the most important archaeological sites in the Najran region, it is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The region, which is 557 square kilometers in size, is home to thousands of inscriptions, mountains covered in rock art, and caves.
