On Tuesday in her hometown of San Francisco, Senator Dianne Feinstein fell and needed to be taken to the hospital.
She was taken to a nearby hospital, but the full extent of her injuries is still unknown.
The 90-year-old senator has had health issues for the past year. Due to encephalitis, Ramsay Hunt syndrome, and shingles earlier this year, she missed more than three months of Senate proceedings.
Additionally, she displayed signs of confusion, telling a reporter upon her return that she wasn’t even gone. She also appeared perplexed during earlier Senate hearings.
Republicans and Democrats have both been calling for her resignation in whispered and louder voices, respectively.
When Dianne Feinstein got involved in local politics in San Francisco in the 1960s, her political career officially began. From 1970 to 1978, she was a member of the city’s Board of Supervisors.
After Mayor George Moscone was killed in 1978, Feinstein was elected as San Francisco’s first female mayor. She was credited with managing the city’s recovery from the Jonestown massacre and fighting for issues like public safety and affordable housing during her tenure as mayor, which lasted until 1988.
In 1992, Feinstein won a seat in the Senate for California. She succeeded Pete Wilson and was the first woman to serve as a senator from California. She has since been re-elected several times, making her one of the senators with the longest tenures among women in American history.
Feinstein has participated in a number of committees while a senator. Notably, she was active in the Senate Judiciary Committee and was essential to the Supreme Court justices’ confirmation hearings. She has also participated in national security-related issues as a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee.
Feinstein has fought for a number of political causes throughout her career, including women’s rights, environmental preservation, healthcare reform, and gun control. Numerous bills on these subjects have been sponsored or co-sponsored by her.
In the Senate, Feinstein has served in leadership roles for the Democratic Party. As the Senate Judiciary Committee’s ranking member, she has participated in significant discussions about nominations to the Supreme Court and to federal courts.
