Authorities said that a 13-year-old Florida honor roll student was detained for allegedly killing his mother with a knife while she was sleeping next to her newborn daughter.
Although Derek Rosa was prosecuted as a kid in the death of his mother, 39-year-old Irina Garcia, he was publicly identified by the Hialeah police due to a second-degree murder offense.
Rosa reported to 911 that he had “just murdered his mother” about 11:30 p.m. on Thursday, according to Lt. Eddie Rodriguez, a spokesman for the Hialeah Police Department. This marked the beginning of the tragic episode.
When police arrived to the family’s West 79th Street apartment, they discovered Garcia dead in her bedroom, inches from a cot that held her 14-day-old daughter, who was unhurt, according to WSVN’s reporting.
Authorities stated that they think Rosa repeatedly knifed his mother in the neck after waiting until she fell asleep.
Rosa was “not what you’d think or expect walking into that home or seeing that crime scene,” Rodriguez said. Rosa interacted with the emergency dispatcher and the responding police in a very kind and regretful manner.
The 13-year-old murder suspect was described as an honor student at iMater Charter Middle/High School who was enrolled in the eighth grade and earning a straight A.
The only three individuals there in the residence on Thursday were Rosa, his young half-sister, and their mother. The truck driver stepfather of the teenager was at the time out of state in Georgia.
Rosa was reported to get along well with his stepfather and had no known history of mental health problems. According to officials, there was no documentation of any police response to the family’s flat prior to Thursday.
Lazaro Rodriguez, a neighbor, spoke to Local 10 in Spanish and added that Rosa was “calm” and was “always with his mom.”
“He would help her carry packages or shopping bags,” Lazaro Rodriguez said. “I never saw anything abnormal with him. I don’t know what could’ve happened.”
A photo that has been shown by local news outlets depicted Rosa and his stepfather dressed in matching light-pink polo shirts and khakis lovingly cradling Garcia’s baby bump during an idyllic maternity photoshoot before the birth of her daughter.
