A Miami police officer is in critical condition after his ex-girlfriend, a former school police officer, shot him in the head during a domestic dispute early on Friday morning.
According to NBC6 News, Damian Colon, a 32-year-old former school officer in Miami-Dade County and a 17-year member of the Miami Dade Police Department, was shot in the head by his estranged girlfriend Yessenia Sanchez.
The seriously hurt cop was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital Ryder’s Trauma Center and is now in a “very critical condition,” according to a spokeswoman for the Miami-Dade Police Department, Sgt. Jose Torres.
After the shooting at dawn on Friday, Sanchez was detained by Hialeah Police and questioned by investigators while the officer had surgery.
Colon was not on duty when the incident took place as he sat in his pickup truck just before dawn.
In the Miami-Dade county city of Hialeah, on the 1200 block of West 79th Street, he was parked in front of his family’s residence.
Sanchez may be seen approaching Colon’s automobile and obstructing it on surveillance video.
Sanchez follows Colon as he exits his truck and makes his way to the porch. A few seconds later, according to sources, Sanchez opens fire at point-blank range on her ex-boyfriend, The Miami-Herald reported.
After shooting him in the head, Sanchez returns to her vehicle and starts driving away. A few miles later, she crashes her automobile and is then apprehended by Hialeah Police.
After an altercation with Colon last year, Sanchez was taken into custody on a charge of domestic violence.
In order to avoid being fired following the domestic violence allegations, she later decided to retire from her position as a school officer with Miami-Dade County.
In June 2019, she had been employed by the Miami-Dade Schools Police Department.
In 2005, Colon began working for the Miami-Dade Police Department. According to the news source, Sanchez also owns UC Apparel Corp., a clothing business that offers T-shirts, patches, and caps.
It was a “very terrible morning,” according to Sgt. Torres.
He asked for prayers for the victim’s family, the Miami-Dade Police Department, and the entire police force, according to the news source.
Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava visited the hospital soon after the shooting to encourage the injured cop and solicit prayers.
She stated, in part, “We’re hoping that this will turn out well, so we want the entire community to come out and join us in prayers and in optimism.”
The news stunned and grieved many of the cops who worked with Colon, and they gathered in front of the hospital to offer their support.
