Authorities in Cambodia have reported that a 30-year-old British tourist who was discovered face down in a sewer there drowned after falling.
On April 6, locals in Tvi Khang Cheung hamlet, Kampot Province, southwest Cambodia, discovered Charlie Gray’s body in a small ditch near a road leading to a place of worship. The discovery prompted police to open an inquiry.
Pictures allegedly taken at the scene show Mr. Gray after he was rescued from the sewage water. Several yards away from the closest road, e was encircled by dense vegetation.
According to reports, after conducting an investigation into Gray’s death, the police determined that he had drowned after sliding face-down into a sewer.
The cause of death was then purportedly determined by ordering an autopsy.
According to local media sources, Gray’s body was subsequently transported to Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia, for additional examination.
It is not yet known if the Cambodian authorities looking into Gray’s death have any suspicions of foul play.
Mr Gray was wearing a pair of black trainers and black shorts but did not have anything on his upper body. He apparently showed no indications of life despite locals’ efforts to awaken him.
He was pronounced dead there when police arrived not long after he was discovered, at about 4 o’clock local time.
The man was already dead when we found him, said horrified neighbour Bong Chea, one of the neighbours who gathered around his body. Someone moved him to see whether he was still alive and to attempt to awaken him. Already dead, he was.
“Nobody knows how he fell into the sewer. We also don’t know who the man was. We hardly see foreigners in this area.”
