India became the first country to successfully land a spacecraft on the south pole of the moon on Wednesday thanks to its low-cost Chandrayaan-3.

Chandrayaan-3 price:

India spent Rs. 615 crore ($74.3 million) on Chandrayaan-3. In comparison to Chandrayaan-2, which had a budget of $96.5 million, it was less expensive. India’s 2019 moon landing attempt, Chandrayaan-2, was a failure after the scientists lost contact with the lunar module just before the planned landing.

“Kinda crazy when you realize India’s budget for Chandrayaan-3 ($75M) is less than the movie Interstellar ($165M),” former journalist Cindy Pom wrote on X (formerly Twitter). Elon Musk replied, writing, “Good for India!”

India used rockets for its most recent accomplishment that were significantly less powerful than those the US used for the Apollo missions back in the 1960s and 1970s. This meant that before starting on its month-long lunar trajectory, the probe had to orbit the Earth several times to pick up speed.

This is due to Chandrayaan-3’s reputation as India’s most affordable lunar exploration mission, which is evidence of the Indian Space Research Organization’s (ISRO) prowess in resource optimization during space mission launches.

ISRO is always looking for ways to improve productivity and cut costs. As a result, everything related to Chandrayaan-3, including the spacecraft, launch vehicle, and ground support infrastructure, was included in the budget that was allotted for it.

Chandrayaan-3 aimed to strengthen India’s space technologies and advance its understanding of the Moon. Its objectives included a soft rover landing on the moon’s surface, exploration of the south pole, research of the lunar surface, and the search for water ice.
