The election to elect Chaudhry Anwar-ul-Haq as Azad Kashmir’s new prime minister was won by him. The legislative assembly gave him 48 of its 52 votes, giving him the largest mandate ever given to a prime minister in the area.
Following Sardar Tanveer Ilyas of the PTI’s disqualification for contempt by the AJK High Court, the election was held. The government had previously failed to submit any nomination papers, so the assembly adjourned a session without holding the election.
After midnight on Thursday, a special meeting was held, and Anwar-ul-Haq was chosen without opposition. In the 15 minutes allotted for submitting nomination papers, he was the only candidate nominated.
The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and the forward bloc each gave Anwar-ul-Haq 12 votes, while the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) gave him seven votes. Barrister Sultan Mehmood Chaudhry, President of AJK, formed a forward bloc in the assembly and rebelled against his own party. According to sources, his bloc is supported by the PPP and the PML-N.
