According to police and her family, a jealous ex-boyfriend shot and killed a Georgia mother of seven as he approached her in a Chik-fil-A drive-thru. He then turned the gun on himself.
Around 7 a.m. on Wednesday, the shocking murder-suicide took place in front of horrified commuters waiting in line for breakfast at the fast food restaurant on Shorter Avenue in Rome, northwest of Atlanta, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
According to Floyd County Deputy Coroner Chris Giles, Cassie Davis, 39, was shot three times through the passenger window by Anthony Wayne Green, 56, who got out of his car and approached her.
After that, he shot himself in the head.
Giles claimed that the two had previously been together.
Davis’ SUV rolled forward, struck a power box, and then descended an embankment into traffic without colliding with any other cars as her body sagged behind the wheel.
According to the Rome News Tribune, Assistant Police Chief Debbie Burnett stated that the initial investigation revealed the shootings were a murder-suicide.
“The incident is not related to Chick-fil-A but rather occurred on the property of the restaurant,” Burnett said.
She claimed that initially, police were called to what they thought to be a car accident.
“Prior to arrival, officers received more information that the incident was a shooting rather than an accident,” Burnett told the news outlet.
According to Fox 5 Atlanta, Davis’ upset mother Kathie Walters described the murderer as an envious ex-boyfriend.
“She didn’t have a mean bone in her body — she was everybody’s friend,” she told the news outlet. “We lost a very sweet lady. She was a good mother of seven.”
Green “just wouldn’t leave her alone,” she claimed. She did mention that he was following her around yesterday, though.
Jackson Davis, who was Davis’s husband for 12 years, expressed his sorrow over her passing.
“She had two boys when we got married. And then, we had two girls,” Jackson told 11 Alive.
“And then, this is the kind of person Cassie is — she took my granddaughter and my grandkids in. Grandkids that she didn’t have to raise. And she raised them as her own,” he said.
“What do you say when your granddaughter said, ‘Daddy, do you have Jesus’ number because I want to talk to Mama one more time’?” Jackson said.
He added that a family member is the 911 dispatcher who took the initial call.
Meanwhile, Cassie’s brother Doug Walters said he was surprised to find out that Green was the killer.
“This isn’t somebody I met a month ago. I mean, I’ve known him forever,” he told 11 Alive.
