Carl Hagelin, who is 35 years old, has decided to leave the NHL, citing an eye condition that has kept him from playing for roughly one and a half years.

Hagelin has been sidelined ever since being struck in the left eye with a stick on March 1, 2022, during a Washington Capitals practice. The team quickly labeled the injury as serious following surgery and expressed concern for Hagelin’s quality of life off the ice.

In February of last year, the slender Swedish winger had hip resurfacing surgery. That followed arthroscopic surgery, which was carried out in October to try to treat a persistent problem with the left hip.

Swedish ice hockey player Carl Hagelin is renowned for his quickness, skill on defense, and ability to kill penalties. He was born in Sodertalje, Sweden, on August 23, 1988. Hagelin’s distinguished career in the National Hockey League (NHL) cemented his place in the hockey world.

Hagelin’s hockey career got its start with the Sodertalje SK junior teams in his native country. To play college hockey at the University of Michigan, he later relocated to the United States. His team advanced to the NCAA Frozen Four tournament thanks to his exceptional speed and two-way play during his college years.

2011 saw the professional debut of Hagelin, who had been selected by the New York Rangers in the sixth round of the 2007 NHL Draft. He quickly established himself as a key member of the team thanks to his speed and defensive prowess. He developed a reputation as a fierce forechecker and important penalty remover. He made a significant contribution to the Rangers’ 2014 Stanley Cup run.

Hagelin played for a number of other teams throughout his NHL career, including the Anaheim Ducks, Pittsburgh Penguins, Los Angeles Kings, and Washington Capitals. He won the Stanley Cup with the Penguins in 2016 and 2017, displaying his adaptability and versatility by doing well in various team systems.

Hagelin’s career has been defined by his consistent ability to stop opponents’ plays, make opportunities for goals, and show seasoned leadership. His swiftness frequently puts pressure on opposing defenses, earning him the moniker “The Swede with Speed.”
