During the weekend, a young father of two who had served in the Navy was fatally shot while driving close to the Los Angeles International Airport on his way home from dinner, according to investigators.
Around two in the morning on Saturday, Carl Flenoy Jr., 28, was driving with his girlfriend when he was ambushed along the 405 Freeway off-ramp in Westchester, California, according to the California Highway Patrol.
“While he’s exiting the freeway, a car approached them and maybe one or two people got out of the car and opened fire on him,” Flenoy’s cousin Jay Wilson told the station KTLA.
CHP detectives said that a hail of six shots were fired at Flenoy’s black Lexus, sending it careening into oncoming traffic.
At the top of the La Tijera Boulevard off-ramp from the northbound 405 Freeway, the deceased was declared dead at the scene.
Initial reports suggested that the shooting may have been related to an earlier collision, however according to Flenoy’s family, no previous incidences of road rage led up to the shooting.
After having supper with friends in Marina Del Rey, Flenoy was on his way home. Family members claimed Flenoy had not been involved in any fights that evening.
There is no reason to think that someone would be trying to harm him, according to Wilson. Simply put, “That is not anything we would ever consider.”
The cousin described the 28-year-old as a great father to his two young daughters, as well as a loving brother and son.
“It’s heartbreaking because he’s a good guy,” he said.
Wilson appealed to any witnesses to come forward with information on the killing.
“We’re hoping somebody has a conscience,” said Wilson. “Somebody out there saw something. Somebody driving by saw something.”
As of Thursday morning, no arrests have been made in the deadly shooting.
