Imran Khan, a former prime minister and leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), will run for all 33 open seats in the National Assembly (NA) by-elections, which will be held on March 16 and were announced on Sunday by the party’s senior vice-president Shah Mehmood Qureshi.
After the PTI core committee meeting, the former foreign minister told a press conference in Lahore that Imran Khan would be the party’s candidate in every seat, and that incumbent MNAs who had previously been elected to those seats would serve as backup candidates.
“The nation will give a clear message on March 16, as the people of Pakistan completely trusts in the leadership of Imran Khan and stand with the PTI,” Shah Mehmood said, adding that the people will also voice their reservations against the group that’s been imposed upon the country.
It is important to note that the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) just announced the schedule for the by-elections to fill the 33 seats in the National Assembly (NA) that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf MNAs left vacant.
The ECP has decided to hold by-polls on 33 NA seats on March 16, for which nomination papers can be received from February 6 to 8.
Following the acceptance of their resignations by the NA speaker, 35 Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) MNAs were recently denotified by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP). The resignations of 113 PTI members were accepted last week in stages by NA Speaker Raja Pervaiz Ashraf.
