A father-and-son team from Alabama, in the United States, captured a huge alligator gar that eventually beat the state record for fishing. The 162-pound (73.4 kg) monster was reeled in by Keith Dees and his son Huntley, who acknowledged they had no idea what it was as they were hauling it into their boat. According to the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, they grabbed the alligator gar in November of last year from the Mobile-Tensaw Delta, the largest river delta and wetland in the Yellowhammer State (ADCNR).
In a news statement earlier this month, the ADCNR stated that the fish exceeded Alabama’s record by 11 pounds (4.9 kg)
In a picture of his amazing discovery that Keith shared on Facebook, he can be seen standing with his kid and the alligator gar that is hanging between them.
Keith said in a Facebook post that he pulled in an unidentified fish as quickly as he could.
“About 11:30 we decided to fish one more spot. I made a cast and about half way back to the boat my chatterbait just went slack. Reeling as fast as I could, I got it tight just before I saw a big fish swim by my trolling motor. Had no idea what it was until it surfaced after about 30 minutes,” Keith said.
Later, he spoke to ADCNR, “When it came up, I knew it was big, but I didn’t even remotely know it was a state record. That never crossed my mind.”
The fishing excursion is an annual Thanksgiving tradition for Keith and Huntley, who have previously caught a number of fish.
