Five days after being knocked out in the eighth and last round of a fight in Barranquilla, Colombian boxer Luis Quinones passed away on Friday.
25 years old was the junior welterweight fighter.
After undergoing surgery for a blood clot in his brain sustained during his bout with fellow unbeaten boxer Jose Munoz last Saturday at Coliseo Elias Chegwi, Quinones, who has a final record of 10-1 (6 knockouts), had been in a coma. With only 30 seconds left in the fight, Quinones lost his composure and was ruled out.
The news was released on Friday by the Colombian Boxing Federation, which issued a statement reading, “We send our most profound condolences to all his family. In his grave, he was at peace and submitted to God’s will.
“I never thought that a dream could turn into a real nightmare,” said Munoz in an open letter which was made public before Quinones’ death.
“The desire to succeed in life put us both on the same path, but because of those things in life and especially the profession we chose, today you are in a situation that we never imagined.
“During the last days, your image does not stop in my head, and I think about the great future that lies ahead.”
