REAL MADRID legend Amancio Amaro has died at the age of 83, according to the Spanish giants.
Between 1962 and 1976, Amancio played for Real Madrid, winning nine LaLiga titles and a European Cup.
In addition to 42 Spain caps, he played for Deportivo La Coruna from 1958 to 1962.
Amancio, nicknamed El Brujo (The Magician), played for Real Madrid during a period of unprecedented success.
“Real Madrid CF, its president, and its Board of Directors deeply regret the death of Amancio Amaro, honorary president of Real Madrid and one of the great legends of our club and of world football,” the LaLiga champions said in a statement.
“Real Madrid would like to express its condolences and affection to his wife Consuelo, his children Oscar, Belen, Amancio, Patricia, Marcos and Claudia, his brother Juan Carlos, his grandchildren and all his relatives, colleagues and loved ones.”
In the 1966 European Cup final, Amancio equalised as Real Madrid came from behind to defeat Partizan Belgrade in Brussels.
In 471 appearances for Real Madrid, the forward scored 155 goals.
Amancio scored in Spain’s semi-final win over Hungary to help the country win the European Championship in 1964.
Amancio remained involved at Santiago Bernabeu after retiring from football.
He began coaching Madrid’s youth teams before becoming manager of Real Madrid Castilla.
Amancio led Castilla to the Segunda title in 1984 before taking over as first team manager later that year.
Following a year in charge, he joined Real Madrid as a consultant, board member, and honorary president, a position he was elected to last year.
Madrid’s statement added: “Amancio Amaro has passed away at the age of 83. He will be remembered by all Madridistas and by all football fans as one of the great legends of this sport.
“Real Madrid extends its condolences to all Real Madrid fans. Rest in peace.”
