Choosing which settings on a Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra S Pen user is looking to change is the trickiest part of learning how to change settings on a device. After all, the solution greatly depends on how you intend to use the stylus with your premium Samsung phone.
One of the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra’s most distinctive features is the S Pen, which comes with the device. Only a small number of smartphones are available that support active styluses, and even fewer of those do so as standard equipment. However, just because a feature is obscure doesn’t mean users shouldn’t be able to control how it operates.
Following a breakdown of all the available options, we’ll demonstrate where to find the S Pen settings for the Galaxy S23 Ultra. The S Pen is a flexible tool, but you won’t be able to use it to its full potential unless you enable, disable, and reconfigure the settings to your preferences.
Consequently, let’s learn how to modify Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra S Pen settings and how doing so can improve how you use the stylus.
How to alter the settings for the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra S Pen:
- When the Air command menu appears, tap the cog icon after removing the S Pen.
- Alternatively, open the Advanced features menu in the Settings app and then choose the S Pen menu.
- Change the settings as necessary.
1. When the Air command menu appears, tap the cog icon after removing the S Pen:
By default, when you remove the S Pen from its silo, the Air command menu will appear. This menu contains a number of shortcuts for common S Pen functions. We’ll discuss how to customize these later.
To access the S Pen settings, tap the cog icon in the bottom left corner of the screen right away.
2. Alternatively, open the Advanced features menu in the Settings app and then choose the S Pen menu:
Open the Settings app if you want to customize your S Pen but don’t want to remove the S Pen right away. Open the S Pen settings by selecting the Advanced features heading.
3. Change the settings as necessary:
Regardless of the method you chose, you are now in the S Pen menu, which provides access to all the information and settings you might need regarding the stylus’ operation.

Here is a list of the settings for your S Pen.
The top illustration shows your S Pen’s battery level (to the right of connectivity status), connectivity status (the pen and curves icon at the top right), and whether it is currently inserted into the Galaxy S23 Ultra or has been removed.
While holding the stylus button, you can use a set of features known as air actions by waving your S Pen in various directions. For instance, you can launch the camera app with a single press and hold, and you can navigate your phone with different acute angle gestures, take screenshots, and more. Additionally, you can create unique Air actions for specific Samsung-approved apps and rebind these actions to new gestures or vice versa.
You can choose between the large default menu, which displays the selected app and function icons along with their names in text, and a smaller toolbar, which only contains the icons, in the Air command menu. The available shortcuts, whether the Air command icon (the highlighted translucent pencil in a circle) is displayed when you’re not using it, and whether pressing the S Pen’s button once brings up the Air command menu are all customizable from this location.
To help you see where your S Pen is hovering, Air View shows a small blue circular pointer on the screen to indicate where it is. By simply hovering the S Pen over the icons for links, images, and calendar events in Previews, you can quickly open a small pop-up. It’s your choice whether to turn both off or just one of the two on.
You can type in text boxes and have it converted to typed text using S Pen to Text. You can also edit typed text. You have more options when writing when the Show writing toolbar is enabled, including the ability to insert emojis, create custom backspace and space buttons, and use a tiny keyboard.
You can choose whether you want to always open the Air command, start a new note in Samsung Notes, or do nothing at all when you remove the stylus using the awkwardly named When S Pen is removed setting.
There are several finer options listed under More S Pen settings.
S Pen unlock enables you to unlock your phone by pressing the stylus’s button.
You can pair additional S Pens with your phone in addition to the one that came with it by allowing multiple S Pens.
Keep S Pen Connected prevents the stylus from disconnecting when it is inserted into the phone, allowing you to use advanced features like Air actions without having to wait until you remove the S Pen from the phone.
If the phone determines that you haven’t used the S Pen for an extended period of time after taking it out of the phone, a pop-up warning will appear.
When you remove or insert the S Pen, Sounds and Vibrations provide their respective forms of feedback. As you write, Sounds also plays a scratchy pencil-like sound.
Under the three dots menu at the top of the display, there are two more items to be aware of. The stylus is broken when you reset the S Pen, and you must put it back in to fix it. If you are experiencing connectivity issues that are currently affecting S Pens, you might want to use this option.
Scan for S Pen Pro enables you to set up Samsung’s top-tier stylus, the S Pen Pro, which you can pair with various Samsung products and use to transfer data between them. If you only use the S23 Ultra, it is not necessary, but it is convenient if you already own a Galaxy Book laptop or a Galaxy Tab tablet.
