Following a village duck race, a teenager who got into trouble in a river and drowned has been identified.
Prior to 8 o’clock on Wednesday, there were reports of a person having trouble in the water, and police later confirmed that they had responded to the site in Tameside along with emergency services.
At after 11 o’clock in the evening, after medics were unable to save the teen, police and fire crews finally departed the area. The incident happened after the annual Broadbottom duck race, a model duck competition that had taken place earlier that day in the Greater Manchester village.
Since the terrible occurrence, Abbie Walton, 15, has received an outpouring of tributes online, with friends sharing their memories of the “beautiful” kid.
Some referred to the fact that Abbie was still grieving the loss of her friend Lucy Smith, who attended the same school and drowned while attempting to save a classmate, several months prior.
One friend said on Facebook that she missed Abbie “so much already it’s unbelievable” but that she was “at rest now with Lucy, keeping her company” and that Abbie was now “keeping her company.”
The school that Abbie attended, Copley Academy, wrote a statement on social media on Thursday afternoon. It read: “Copley Academy have been made aware of the devastating news that one of our pupils lost their life last night. We extend our sincere condolences to everyone affected by this tragedy.
“Our hearts and thoughts go out to the families, loved ones, friends and local communities affected at this extremely sad time. Copley would like to offer our support and also the support of a specialist team.”
Greater Manchester Police also offered their deepest sympathy and said they would continue to support the girl’s family.
Detective Superintendent Rebecca Boyce said: “Yesterday evening’s events are nothing short of devastating and my deepest sympathies are with the loved ones of the girl who lost her life in such awful circumstances.
“Officers will continue to support the family during this incredibly difficult time.”
