A massive earthquake with a magnitude of 6.8 jolted parts of Pakistan for at least 30 seconds on Tuesday, but it was unclear whether the tremor caused damage or casualties.
Tremors from the earthquake were felt in Lahore, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Quetta, Peshawar, Kohat, Lakki Marwat, and other cities across the country.
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department, the earthquake’s epicentre was in Afghanistan’s Hindu Kush region, and its depth was 180 kilometres (PMD).
Peshawar, Swabi, Lodhran, DG Khan, Bahawalpur, Skardu, Kohat, Toba Tek Singh, Parachinar, Nowshera, and Khanewal were also affected by the earthquake.
According to Reuters, shaking could be felt as far away as the Indian capital of New Delhi.
Because the Indian plate is pushing north into the Eurasian plate, large parts of South Asia are seismically active.
“People ran out of their houses and were reciting the Quran,” an AFP correspondent in Rawalpindi said.
