But after the event on Thursday, at least 11 persons were dead and eight more are missing.
The search for the missing lasted until dusk and involved divers, at least nine vessels, and a helicopter.
Authorities in Para said that the boat had left a covert port and was not authorised to provide intercity passenger transport services.
The moment when water began to enter the boat is captured on the passenger’s video, which can be seen here.
A second video depicts survivors clinging to the sinking ship in the dark river.
The wreck will be investigated, according to the Brazilian Navy.
When the unfortunate boat sank at around 9.30 am, it was travelling from the community of Camara to the riverside metropolis of Belem.
The vessel, Santa Lourdes, belonged to the firm M. It’s reported about Souza Navegacao, which had previously been accused of operating illegally.

He had survived the sinking, according to investigators, but he had fled and was still missing.
According to reports, the survivors are receiving care from the Belem Department of Health.
